In 2020, there were 8,265,000 people living in Virginia, of which about 33% are renters. The median income was $49,613 and the median rent was $1,257. Approximately 44% of renters are considered rent-burdened. The unemployment rate was 4.6% in 2020.1

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a state-wide moratorium on evictions from March 16, 2020-May 18, 2020 and June 8, 2020-June 29, 2020 and August 10, 2020-September 7, 2020.2 The CDC moratorium was in place from September 4, 2020 through August 26, 2021.

Please note that these filings counts in recent months are approximately 94% of all filings through the end of September 2021 reported by the courts. The filing rate relative to the historical average is likely higher than the values presented here.
